Red wines from the Left and Right Banks of Bordeaux from the De Mour Group

Bordeaux wines are divided by the Garonne and the Dordogne into two main groups: the Left Bank and the Right Bank. These two regions produce wines with distinct characters. What are their main characteristics, and why are these differences so pronounced? The key points are outlined in this comparative guide.

Terroirs: The Foundation of Everything

Left or Right Bank in Bordeaux ?

The left bank is characterised by predominantly gravelly soils. These gravels retain heat and provide excellent drainage, conditions that are particularly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety.

The right bank is characterised by clay-limestone soils. This soil composition is ideal for Merlot, which develops its full range of aromas and characteristic roundness here.

Dominant Grape Varieties: Different Personalities

On the Left Bank, Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme. It is complemented by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These blends are renowned for their powerful tannic structure.

On the right bank, Merlot is the preferred variety, often blended with Cabernet Franc. This combination produces wines that are generally more supple and approachable when young.

Taste Characteristics: Distinct Profiles

Wines from the Left Bank are prized for their tannic structure, power and ageing potential. Notes of blackcurrant, cedar and graphite are frequently detected in these wines.

Wines from the Right Bank are characterised by their roundness, intense fruitiness and silky texture. Aromas of plum, truffle and violet are typically found in these wines.

Iconic Appellations: The Identity Card

The left bank is home to the prestigious appellations of Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Pessac-Léognan. These areas are world-renowned for their grands crus classés, classified in 1855.

The right bank is represented by the famous Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and Fronsac. These appellations are renowned for their unrivalled charm and elegance.

Discover These Two Worlds

The De Mour Group offers you a unique opportunity to compare these two expressions of the Bordeaux terroir. As the owner of Châteaux Tour Baladoz and La Croizille, Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés on the right bank, as well as Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in the Margaux appellation on the left bank, the group enables wine lovers to discover the very essence of these two legendary banks.
