Founded in 1916, Babich Wines is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected wineries. Based in the Auckland region, the Babich family also cultivates vines in Hawke’s Bay, one of the country’s most prestigious red wine regions. Through a sustainable approach and meticulous winemaking, the estate produces authentic wines that truly reflect their terroir. The Babich Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2018 is a fine example, combining character, finesse, and drinkability.
This wine comes from a selection of grapes grown in plots with a moderate maritime climate. Vinification in stainless steel tanks, followed by partial aging in oak barrels, preserves the fruit's vibrancy while adding complexity. The result? A supple yet structured red wine with aromas of sweet spices and dark fruit, and a beautiful tension on the palate. It perfectly illustrates the fresh, New Zealand style applied to a classic Rhône grape variety.
The wine has a deep, purplish hue. The nose reveals notes of blackberry, black pepper, clove, and violet. On the palate, it offers an elegant texture, well-integrated tannins, and a lively acidity that extends the finish. This wine combines suppleness, intensity, and freshness, making it equally enjoyable on its own or with a flavorful dish.
